[Review] The Notorious
By Zenna Newman-Santos
Having never seen a show put on by From the Hip Productions, I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect going into The Notorious. From what I had been hearing, I knew I would be seeing something that had a bit of comedy, a bit of drama and more than a few plot twists. I was not disappointed.
The Notorious is a punchy one act show about two police detectives, Detective Nolan (Declan Atkinson) and Detective Wren (Jason Tolj) getting a confession for a murder they believe was committed by Jennifer Bryant (Ella Ewart). But somehow, it’s about so much more. That being said, I really don’t want to go into the plot in any detail for fear of spoiling anything for any potential patrons. It truly was a rollercoaster of a script that had me in stitches one moment and gasping about a sudden twist the next. The real beauty of it was the way it told a complete story in 45 minutes. There were no wasted moments, every line had a purpose.
However, not all the credit can go to the writer, director, lighting and sound designer, Tim Brain. Recognition must be given to the work done by his cast. They took his script and direction and delivered killer (excuse the pun) performances all round. I normally like to give credit to one or two stand out performances, but I found it impossible for this show. All three actors were wonderful to watch and had beautiful moments of both comedy and sincerity.
Even the technical elements of the show were a pleasure to watch and listen to. Each new location had such a distinct place within the sparse set (designed by Ally Snell) that I almost, almost, doubted when I walked into the theatre. I should have known better! The sound and lighting designs, operated by Sabrina Wyatt, were simple and very effective in building a world we were stepping into for such a short time.
In fact, I think my only criticism is that I wish it was longer! I just wanted to know more about these characters and their world and how they got to where they are when we see them. I guess I’ll just have to see it again…
The Notorious is one for one more weekend, October 12th and 13th, at Studio 411 on Murdoch Campus at 7pm. There is a lock out, so don’t be late! Tickets are available at www.fromthehip.com.au. Don’t miss out!
